As more stringent environmental regulations come into force from DEFRA it is now becoming imperative for farmers to invest in their animal waste management systems. This can result in environmental and economic benefits and is fast becoming an important part of any livestock farm.
Animal waste management systems start with a slurry store and this can come in many different guises. The two main options for slurry stores are concrete and steel, this article will focus on concrete stores. Farmers can collect, scrape and/or wash animal waste into the slurry store, thus helping protect the environment and also enjoying the benefits for fertiliser.
Concrete panels are often a popular product due to their versatility. Panels can be used horizontally with steel supports, or can be used vertically and cast into a concrete foundation. L shape concrete retaining walls can be used; they can either be bolted down to a secure foundation or can be cast into a concrete foundation. Above ground concrete stores are becoming more popular, these are constructed using concrete sections which are then post tensioned. Full in-situ solutions offer a greater degree of flexibility however it will generally be a more complex construction project.
Sealing is a very important part of constructing a store and sealant must comply with BS8007. Additionally joints should be regularly checked and repaired when required.
When constructing slurry stores it is important to look at the regulations and ensure any solution is fully compliant. More information can be found on the DEFRA website or by speaking to the suppliers in the market.
